Initially, there are a couple of things to determine.
Do I need content for my business?
I'm hoping the answer might be "Yes"! I'm yet to come across any business that doesn't need any written copy.
Am I happy writing the content myself?
Your answer could be that, "Yes", you're the person who knows most about your business and you have the time to do it and you enjoy writing.
All I can say here is keep doing it.
However, just pause for a moment! As your business grows and ultimately that's what you are striving for, there may come a point when you ask yourself:
Do I still have the time to write my own blogs and content?
Your time could be better spent working exclusively on your business. I'm hoping now your answer might be "No"!
However, for the purpose of this article, you do need a copywriter so how do you choose?
Establish Who is Going to Write For You
I would advocate that you begin working with a copywriter sooner rather than later. OK, you are thinking, a copywriter is writing this! However, there are good reasons why I say this.
You have the time to work with your writer and get to know if you can work with that person and that they are conveying what you want with the right tone. The message they put across will be shaping your brand and you want it to be attracting potential customers and not the opposite.
Where to Find Your Copywriter
There are lots of ways of finding potential copywriters:
• Networking
• Recommendation
• Google Search
• Website Testimonials
You now have a name or names. Connect with them and see how long it takes them to respond - that might be a key issue in the future. If somebody you know has used them, check if they have been satisfied with their work.
Examples of Articles
• Check Out What They Have Written in the Past
• What Style Are They Using
• Diversity of Portfolio
A good copywriter will direct you to articles they have written or send you examples of their work. You now have seen their work and you like what you are seeing.
Are they available?
• Starting Date
• How Many Articles Do You Require
You need to be realistic about how many articles you need - will it be weekly, every other week or monthly? OK, they are available, the next question is the awkward one!
How Much Do They Charge?
This will vary. Some writers charge by the word, others per article. Expect experienced writers to perhaps charge more.
Turnaround Time
This could be critical. Ask your writer how long the project will take and when you can expect to receive the finished article. You need a copywriter that will deliver the work on time.
The Right Copywriter is Out There!
Choosing the right copywriter is a key element of your business plan. Make sure you are working with somebody who offers the services you want at a cost that suits your marketing budget. You also want somebody that you feel at ease calling if you have any questions.
