Working ON Your Business During Lockdown

April 21, 2020 Annie Dixon
W&B - Lockdown.jpg

This is a strange time, one that we could not have envisioned or planned for. Your brand’s relationship with your customers is perhaps more critical at this time than ever before.

Hitting the Ground Running

A phrase that many people are using is, “Hitting the ground running”. This translates into putting your business in the best place that it could possibly be when the lockdown restrictions begin to ease. A key part of this is keeping your presence out there, even if you are in a business that is unable to operate at the moment or what you can do is severely restricted.

 Working ON Your Business

It’s a great opportunity to work ON your business, and as a copywriter and LinkedIn expert, I’m helping clients new and old to stay in the virtual limelight.

Just take a moment to reflect on the following:

o   Would you like to write blogs that have more impact?

o   You know you should have a blog, but don’t know where to start?

o   Do you think your website content could be updated as it really isn’t illustrating your USPs and why people should be using you?

o   Could you send out a newsletter to keep in touch with your clients?

o   Are your profiles on the various social media platforms selling you and your products?

o   Is your LinkedIn profile up to date? (If you have your own business – make sure it doesn’t read like a CV)

o   Are you posting regularly on your social media platforms - Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram?

o   Could you collect some case studies – clients describing situations where you have solved their problems?

o   Why not interview your clients - happy clients will sing your praises?

o   Could you collect some testimonials?

o   Would you like to gain more leads from LinkedIn?

It’s so important to keep in touch with your clients. If you would like any help with any of the above, please contact Annie on 07742 321513 or email annie@writingandblogging.co.uk

Case Studies - An Important Element Of Your Content Marketing Strategy

August 1, 2018 Annie Dixon
images.jpg

Case studies, sometimes referred to as success stories are a great way of demonstrating how your services or products provide solutions and create results for your would-be clients. They recount a customer’s experience and are the proof that people are looking for in order to make a decision as to whether to use you or not. Let’s face it, we are always looking for recommendations from people we know as to whether they have used a particular product or service or we look online for reviews and endorsements, to see what other people are saying. These recommendations and endorsements are often key in any decisions that are ultimately made.

What Can Case Studies Do For Your Business?

•   Demonstrate your expertise

•   Prove you are an authority in your field

•   Establish and grow your brand

•   Develop brand loyalty

•   Provide an endorsement of your products and services

Demonstrate Results And Endorse Your Products And Services

Case studies will back up what you say you can do by providing examples of your expertise, establishing you as the “go to” person in that field. Youknow that you are the person people should be turning to and youknow that your products are the ones people should be using, so it’s vital that prospects see that your products and services are bringing the actual results you are claiming. By showing that your products/services can solve problems will establish and develop your brand leading to loyalty and repeat business.  Case studies will bring your products and services to life by providing real life examples to give would-be customers the reassurance and confidence required to give you a go.

Focus On Different Aspects Of Your Business

There may be a specific feature that you want to highlight or a particular benefit and case studies can showcase unique results. Focusing on a different aspect, will allow you to promote one particular product/service many times.

What To Do With Your Case Studies

•   Write blog posts

•   Have a dedicated Case Study page on your website

•   Post on social media

•   Place quotes on services pages

•   Use in your newsletters

•   Incorporate into your email marketing

The case study can be used as a blog post and incorporated into your newsletters and email marketing and you will also have quotes that can be placed on various landing pages of your website and these will be great for using on social media as well.

What To Do Next

Are you looking to use case studies as part of your business blog or content marketing strategy, do get in touch with the experts at Writing and Blogging on 07743 321513 or email annie@writingandblogging.co.uk

Do You Know Your USP?

January 21, 2018 Annie Dixon
USP.jpg

Do you know what your Unique Selling Point (USP) is? Don’t worry if you cannot answer this question, well just for the moment anyway, as many business owners cannot answer this fundamental point, which is more than likely the key to their business success.

You Need More Than Being Experienced and Professional

So what is a USP? Simply it’s what differentiates your company from all your competitors and everyone else in the market place. Today, it’s no good saying that you are professional, experienced, fabulous at what you do, caring and the best in the business. These are characteristics that anyone searching for your line of business will be expecting as standard, so why waste your time and effort telling them this. Actually, it’s a huge waste of time as a potential client has already moved on to one of your competitors. You only have a few seconds to grab their attention.

What Solutions Are You Offering?

You need to be telling people what makes you unique. What is it about you that makes you stand out from the crowd and what it is that will ensure you are chosen and not another business offering the same service or product? In essence, what solutions are you offering for the problem in hand? Also, can you back up what you are saying - what guarantee are you offering?

Be Different To Make The Difference

It’s certainly worth spending time on establishing your USP and once you are happy that you know what makes you different, ensure that you tell people. It needs to be on your website to grab immediate attention. Telling people why you are different could make a lot of difference to your business - maybe whether you succeed or fail.

People are naturally selfish when they want something done and really do only care about what you can do for them at this particular moment in time - NOW!

What To Do Next

Writing and Blogging has been creating and crafting website copy that makes businesses stand out by establishing what makes them different. If you are struggling to get your message across and are using too many clichéd expressions, call us on 07742 321513 or email annie@writingandblogging.co.uk

It could make a big difference!

How To Start A Travel Blog - Picking A Name And Platform

October 7, 2017 Annie Dixon
Starting A Travel Blog.jpg

As a blogger, I get asked how to set up different types of blogs but the most frequently asked for is help setting up a travel blog. Setting up a blog before you set off on your travels can be a great way of still connecting with the world and particularly with your friends and family while you are away. It provides a great way of mapping your journey by way of a written diary and of course pictures.

You will have to do the following:

•   Pick a name

•   Choose a platform

Picking a Name

There are lots of Travel Bloggers out there and some make a good living by travelling the world and writing about their exploits. However, I expect at this point in time, you are just thinking of it more as a travel log. Selecting your name is really important and here are a few tips:

•   Keep it short

•   Make sure it’s memorable

•   Easy to spell

•   Simple to share

•   Avoid hyphens and numbers

•   Don’t use over-used words

What’s The Purpose Of Your Travel?

As I said, there are some famous travel bloggers out there, so try to avoid repeating their names. Think about what best describes your blog. Is it the adventures, food or culture that you are looking forward to experiencing or something else?

•   Where are you going?

•   What do you want to write about?

•   Who are you?

•   What is your passion?

I suggest that you write everything down and start playing around with different word combinations. Get out the dictionary or thesaurus and ask your friends for advice and suggestions - it’s probable that they know you better than you know yourself. You’ll be surprised what you come up with when you give it some thought!

Try to be original and think long-term. You don’t want to be calling yourself Far East Jane if you are going to South America next time.

Great Travel Bloggers

The following have well read Travel Blogs:

Expert Vagabond

Savvy Backpacker

Never Ending Footsteps

Young Adventress

Indiana Jo

Travel Rants

Nomadic Matt

Europe A La Carte

Select A Name That Fits Your Personality

It can be difficult coming up with a name that is unique, but this element of the process is really important. There are lots of bloggers using the following:

•   Global

•   Nomad

•   Adventurous

•   Wander

•   Journey

•   Backpacker

•   Travel, Traveller, Travelling

•   Vagabond

It really is a good idea to give time to selecting the domain name for your travel blog, as you don’t want to be changing it at a later date. As with any company, branding is important.

Platform

You will need to find the best platform for your needs.

·      Ease of use

·      Customisation tools

·      Caters to your level

·      Budget

·      Free or paid for site

·      Earn money or a hobby?

Ask Yourself Lots of Questions

If you are not skilled in websites, you do want something that is relatively simple and straightforward to use. Ask yourself if you want your audience to read and then react to your posts and if so, your site must have customisation tools. As a website operator, what level are you at - a beginner or advanced?

Are you familiar with HTML or CSS? You must decide on how much you want to spend as naturally you should get more options, the more you spend. Do you want a free site? Some sites provide both free and paid services, which could come in very useful if your blog, which started out small turns into one that lots of people want to follow.

Keep Your Options Open

Remember, it may start out as a hobby but could turn into a real money-spinner, so that’s why it’s worth taking the time to set it up properly in the first place.

•   WordPress.com

•   WordPress.org

•   Hostgator

•   Blogger

•   Tumblr

•   Ghost

•   Weebly

•   Wix

•   Squarespace

•   Joomla

•   Typepad

Once you have picked a name and a platform, it just requires the following:

•   Pick a host

•   Pick a theme and collect some plug-ins

•   Embrace social media

•   Write your first post

•   Know to write about

These are all topics in themselves, so keep reading my future blogs to find out more.

Writing and Blogging regularly blogs for many clients in a variety of businesses and if you need help going forward, get in touch with annie@writingandblogging.co.uk or maybe you have decided to start your own personal blog and need to talk it through.

Provide Helpful Information In Your Blog

September 12, 2017 Annie Dixon
index.jpg

People love to be helped and they want their questions answered and these are 2 key elements, which will attract people to your blog. It’s all about doing the research for your readers, which will prove to them that you know your stuff and know what you’re doing.

Discover what your audience wants to read about. You can get some insights from your social media and you should be able to find clues so that you can find out what they need help with.

Tell Readers What The Article Is About

At the outset, it can be a little bit like “trial and error” as you try to find readers. Initially, tell them exactly what you are writing about, it could be that it’s just what they are looking for.

Concentrate on providing good content, which is interesting and engaging. It will take you time to be creative and different and any article must be well researched. Keep it fairly simple and get to the point. Tell your readers how you are going to help them in the first paragraph.

Post Consistently

Consistency is key. Decide how often you want to post your blog and stick to it. Try to post once a week and at minimum, once a month. Schedule it into your “to do” list and make sure your blog is ready every week. You will be writing about topics that you are on expert, so write passionately. However, many business owners in their familiarity with their subject forget that their readers aren’t such experts. So again, keep it simple and have fun writing - you are trying to help people.

Tips For Success

 •    A compelling headline

•    Regular blogs

•    Easy to read

•    Correct spelling and grammar

•    Clear photographs, diagrams

•    Sharing, following and commenting buttons

•    Fresh content

•    Develop your personal style

So it all boils down to writing about what your readers want and not what you want. A beautifully constructed blog will be of no use if it’s not helping your readers.

What To Do Next

Writing and Blogging provides articles for many clients and writes on many subjects. We have the time, if you don’t, and we think outside of the box to provide creative, unique and interesting posts. Often, because we are not so close to your business, we can see more clearly what readers may struggle with, what they need help with and what questions they need answered. What To Put On Your Home Page?

August 21, 2017 Annie Dixon
home-page-97309212.jpg

As with all things, there is lots of debate about the importance of the Home page and indeed its relevance. People may feel that more and more they are directed to landing pages, so is it a page that you should really spend lots of time creating?

The answer is quite simply, “Yes!”

Why Is Your Home Page So Important?

And it’s imperative that you make it effective. Here we go through why it’s important and how you can get the maximum from it and that means people finding it and converting them to customers.

•    Repeat visitors

•    Part of your brand

•    Needs to convey a good impression

Repeat Visitors

Repeat visitors will often go to the Home page first; they know the url so will go there directly as will people who you have just given your business card to. Here, there will be no need to find you rather via a search engine or social media platform.

You really don’t want anyone that finds you to have an immediate poor impression of your brand by finding a poorly written, messy page.

 A Stand Out Headline

Ensure the headline stands out by focusing on your most important benefit. People are more likely to read the headline than the actual content. Think about your Unique Selling Points, those things that really make you stand out from the competition.

Keep it simple and immediately obvious that you offer the service or product that people are looking for. Make it easy for people to go to other parts of your site to find the things that they are looking for.

Important Considerations

•    Clear, concise copy

•    Easy navigation

•    Use good English and grammar

•    Include keywords

•    Include a ‘Call To Action’

•    It will take time

Cut Out The Waffle

Quite often, less is more! Many people have too much text, which becomes ambiguous and repetitive. Your Call To Action should be clear so that if potential customers want to get in touch with you, they can do it easily.

So we have established that you don’t need too much content, so ensure what you do write is perfect as any spelling mistakes or grammatical errors will stand out like beacons. Keywords are of course important but still try to write naturally and don’t force them into the text.

Conclusion

Your Home page is certainly not the only way people can access your site but not paying enough attention to it could be extremely detrimental.

What To Do Next

Writing and Blogging has written many Home pages for its clients and understands how important this page is to your website. Is Free Information Good For Business?

May 15, 2017 Annie Dixon

Many people worry that they may be giving away too much information when they blog and they are fearful that they will lose business rather than gain it. If you are thinking someone will do the job themselves, it's really worth looking and evaluating the benefits of blogging and why we blog.

To build an audience, you need to provide lots of amazing and interesting content as well as good advice and useful and helpful information, which all adds up to supplying fabulous value to your readers and more importantly, you are establishing yourself as an expert in what you do, the person people need to turn to when they require your product or service.

Become The Expert That People Are Looking For

Just don't worry if you feel that you are giving away some tricks of the trade, all it will do is prove that you really know what you are talking about - you know your stuff and you ARE the expert that people are looking for.

Look at it from your potential client's point of view and your own. I think we would all rather use somebody who seems to know what they are doing and they appear to have proven knowledge, in fact they seem an authority in their line of work and ultimately seem to be somebody that can be trusted.

You Can "Try Before You Buy"

So, how do you know that they are experts? Simple, really, they have been writing informative and interesting articles so in effect you have a “try before you buy” situation. It could be looked at from the point of view that if they are giving away so much advice for free, how amazing will they be when you pay for their services?

Of course, inevitably, there are always people who will use every means at their disposal and glean every piece of information that is out there and do it themselves. By hook or by crook, these people will find the information they are looking for and realistically they have no intention of paying anyone to do a job that they feel they can do themselves.

Be Content With The Consolation Prize

It's inevitable that these people will not become your clients, but they won't become anyone else's either! The only consolation is that they might recommend you to somebody else, who will find your website and use your products or services.

There really is no such thing as too much free content!

If you are looking to promote your business as the ultimate authority by offering helpful, informative and interesting articles and you don't have either the time and/or the writing skills to write blogs yourself, please get in touch with the experts at www.writingandblogging.co.uk or call Annie on 07742 321513

Your Blog Is A Perfect Platform For Longtail Keywords

April 5, 2017 Annie Dixon

Some markets are extremely competitive and it is really hard to get your company to rank highly as large companies dominate search results because of their large marketing budgets including a large specific spend on SEO. As a small to medium sized enterprise, it will be difficult to compete on a small budget and consequently many companies are increasingly gearing their keyword searches towards long-tail as opposed to the fiercely competitive field of core keywords.

First of all, let's start with the definition. A Long Tail Keyword is a sentence or phrase, which is highly specific. They are keyword phrases consisting of 3 or 4 or even more words related to what you are selling or the services that you are offering. So, a potential customer will quite often type into their search exactly what they are looking to buy.

The Point Of Sale Could Be Very Close

Let's think about that in more detail. You might Google the word “desk”, which is a very broad, generic keyword and at this point you probably don't have any intention of buying, you are simply looking for ideas and companies that sell desks. However, as you draw closer to the point of purchase, you will start to search more specifically and could type in a long-tail keyword such as, “traditional reproduction pedestal Cromwell style desk". You now know exactly what type of desk will suit your room or office and you are at the point of pressing that "purchase" button, visiting the shop or calling to find out more information.

Long Tail Keywords Are Very Valuable For Small Businesses

If you are a small company that sells classic desk furniture, there is little chance that your page will appear near the top of an organic search for “desks” because there is so much competition out there. However, if you specialise in reproduction desks and you have the “traditional reproduction pedestal Cromwell style desk", you could be found amongst all the "desk selling" giants.

Less Traffic But Higher Conversion Rates

Long-tail keywords will help your ranking and there is more chance that these will be contained in blogs and in fact I would go as far as to say that a site without a blog will have a hard time ranking for long-tail search queries. Your website may only be successfully ranking for business-specific keywords and you could be missing out on the people that are searching through phrases which will often match phrases used in your blog posts.

More Content - More Long Tail Keywords

The more content you have, the better chances you have for ranking for long-tail questions and the more chances you have to rank for less common, but ultimately higher-converting keyword phrases. It's just getting your head around the fact that although pursuing long tail keywords will result in less search volume, it is a better long-term strategy, particularly for smaller businesses.

Blogging in itself is also a long-term strategy and will create more opportunities for your prospects to find you in the course of their research.

Are you ready to get blogging but not sure where to start? Writing and Blogging is actively helping many businesses to stand out from their competitors so call Annie on 07742 321513 or email annie@writingandblogging.co.uk to learn more about how we can help support your marketing plans by writing interesting and engaging articles about your business to include long tail keywords.

Stand Out From Your Competitors With A Company Blog

March 26, 2017 Annie Dixon

Blogging is one of the best ways to differentiate yourself and stand out from your competitors. However, make sure that you are blogging on your company’s website and don't be tempted to set up a separate blog if you are writing articles related to your company.

I quite often hear people say, "That blogging thing doesn't work" and of course it is natural and correct to be sceptical and questioning. However, research and studies conducted on blogging speak for themselves and websites that have a blog are known to get seven times more traffic than those that don't.

If you are a small to medium sized business, blogging can to some extent help you to compete with larger businesses as you have the opportunity to provide your own unique thoughts and insights about the services that you provide. By delivering well-written, informative and helpful articles, you naturally grow your search traffic, which leads to customer trust and ultimately, sales.

 Look At The Competition

I entitled this, "Standing out from your Competitors", so have a look at the blogs that your competitors are actually writing. You might discover that this exercise has quite surprising results. You will probably find that very few of your competitors actually have a company blog and those that do seem to only add fresh material occasionally or if they do it's just promotional stuff and sales pitches. Some might have a “News” section but this is often "copy and paste" and isn't driving traffic to their website.

OK, you are going to find some of your competitors do have blogs and my guess is that they are very successful enterprises. They are companies that focus on all elements of their businesses including devoting the time and energy to maintaining a regular blog and it is really paying dividends.

 Blogging Tips

 •    Keep It Simple

•    Check To See What Your Competitors Are Doing

•    Write Using Correct English - Grammar, Punctuation

•    Focus On the Content

•    Introduce Images and Pictures

•    Plan

•    Publish Regularly

 Plan And Publish Regularly

Key to your blogging success is to plan and have an editorial calendar. A big mistake that a lot of business owners and marketers make is to start really enthusiastically and roll out the first few blogs quite quickly and then think that there is nothing left to say. This often leads to the blog going to the bottom of the "to do" list with a feeling that “it hasn't worked”!

Having an editorial calendar for your blog will help you to become more organised and it's a good idea to schedule them into your diary so that they are ready by a certain date or day of the month. You wouldn't let a client down on a time deadline, so don't let yourself down.

Be Patient - That Light Bulb Moment Will Happen

Writing and Blogging has seen dramatic returns for businesses that blog regularly although this may take some time and can be dependent on how often you post. Always remember that with every blog post, you are adding an extra page to your website which gives more opportunities to be found. Many of our clients report to receiving enquiries from articles that have been written in the past making your website the sales force that never sleeps.

Writing and Blogging not only writes for many successful businesses, so that they always have their blogs ready for posting but also holds one to one sessions with clients so that they can learn more about why they should be blogging and how they should be doing it. Blog Coming Soon!

January 28, 2017 Annie Dixon

It never ceases to amaze me the number of websites that I come across that have, "Blog Coming Soon"  written in the related section.  I'm always naturally curious when I meet people and one of the first things I do is look at their websites to understand and learn more about their particular business. As a writer, I'm naturally interested in their website content but l'm particularly drawn to their blog and news pages and I always feel somewhat cheated if I'm greeted with those immortal words and I probably don't need to repeat them again.

Anything Will Do!

It's also quite irksome when I do find articles written and it's obvious from the date or content that they are not current and it seems apparent that the article has just been published because "something" must go there and I find the content is of little value and is full of mistakes. The information may be "out of date" or it's related to a particular time of year which is well and truly over, for example, "Tips on Preparing For A Summer Bar-be-que" and it's now the beginning of February! (Note to myself, don't publish this in July!)

You've Probably Lost a Potential Client!

Of course, there is a chance that I have just stumbled across the site a few hours before the first blog post is due to be posted and I might have been really unlucky and missed out on a real gem. However, it's not "bad luck" for me, it's really bad news for the company as a potential client may leave your site thinking, "This company isn't ready for me! I'll try someone else!"

So What Does The Statement, "Blog Coming Soon" Really Mean?

"I really don't have a clue what to write about!"

"I will get around to this, but at the moment I have better things to do with my time!"

"The Blog section is at the bottom of my priorities and how important is it anyway?"

The bottom line is that you should really be saying, "Blog Is NOT Coming Soon!"

How Do You Get Over This Dilemma?

OK - I know, just write an article and publish it!

Perhaps you do have a topic in mind but you seem to have been agonising over it for what seems like days or weeks as to the best way to approach it. If this is the case, just start!

Or, maybe you have something that's partially written or even completed but because you are such a perfectionist, you don't feel it's ready for publication. Do remember, you are not trying to win the Orange Prize for Literature! Just ensure that the article is interesting and will appeal to your readers and it is without grammatical and spelling errors. Always use a Proofreader if you feel your use of the English language isn't perfect.

But, let's say that this is not an option!

Be Creative

Get creative with your page and think of some catchy phrases backed up by some interesting designs and pictures, for example a post box, a post it sticker, a clock or timer or a notepad or book and use colour to bring some life to the page without content. By doing this, you will be sending out a positive message.

"Hang in there!"

"Sit tight!"

"Fasten Your Seat belts, You're In For An Interesting Ride!"

Direct People Away From Your Blog Page

Another alternative is to distract people by diverting them to another page of your website, or you could ask them to sign up for your newsletter or direct them to your Facebook or Twitter feeds. I don't want to go around in circles here, but you will need content for all your social media and your newsletters so don't create a "double whammy" by directing them to a social media site that is empty. Remember, if you ask people to do something, they often oblige!

Remove The Blog Page

The last option and in my opinion, the least desirable is to remove the page altogether. However, if you do this, try to think of it as a temporary measure! If it is the latter, set yourself a time limit, perhaps a week or a month and hold yourself accountable. You may find that once the pressure of "having to fill that space" has gone, your thought processes become clear and your creative writing talents begin to flow.

The Real Solution

The real answer is to have content really for your blog page before you set it up. This can be achieved by:

•   Getting your website content writer to include at least 1 blog and preferably 2 or 3 when all the copy is prepared

•   Using a professional blogger to write your articles

•   Learning how to plan and schedule your blogs so you are never short of content

What To Do Next

Writing and Blogging wants to eradicate, "Blog Coming Soon" and is helping many business owners with their blog writing by holding 1 to 1 sessions that will teach you why you should, how to construct a blog and how to plan your blogs so that you will never be short of ideas or content again. In this way you will have all the encouragement and motivation that you need to keep your Blog Page vibrant and interesting.

Alternatively, we can write your blogs for you.

Proofreading Is An Essential Part Of The Writing Process

January 11, 2017 Annie Dixon
images.jpeg

Do you ever cringe when you receive an email, a leaflet or a letter or you’re reading a magazine or book and you notice there are grammatical and spelling errors? A mistake tends to stand out like the proverbial “sore thumb” and a glaring error or two may spoil an otherwise excellent article. Several errors may even cause you to stop reading altogether.

Have you ever spent a lot of money on a brochure and found there is a “howler” on the Introductory page or perhaps invested in having 5,000 flyers printed to find it has the wrong information, perhaps an incorrect address or even the wrong date. Do you wonder how the writer, the designer or the printer has not spotted these typos?

It’s probably because it’s not their job!

Perhaps, your writer was thinking just about word count and content and presuming somebody else would be proofreading the article. The designer has used the words to create an attractive design, and the printer has checked quality, layout and colours. They might have picked up a few things, but, ultimately, the poor quality of your copy will detract from the overall good quality of your brochure or flyer.

Spell Checkers are not infallible

So, how can this happen? Today, it should be straightforward to write perfectly as many programmes have spell checking functionality and these should spot spelling errors and wayward grammar! However, beware! Spell checkers won’t spot words that have been incorrectly used if they are spelt correctly.

The following will all need proofreading:

•      College Thesis

•      Press Release

•      Magazine Article

•      Leaflet/Flyer

•      Blog

•      Email to a Client

•      Business Document

•      Business Card

First impressions count

A text free of errors is essential to make a good impression. Before you send anything, make sure that it’s well written and free from mistakes including spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, grammar and English usage. Remember, this may be your first contact with a potential client, a potential employer or an examiner and it’s vital to make it count.

If you are checking your own work, make sure you don’t miss an error. You may think it’s not critical but a misplaced comma can dramatically alter the meaning of a sentence and may not convey the message as you are intending.

If you are proofreading your own articles, make sure to:

•   Concentrate

•   Read it aloud

•   Print it and use a pen

•   Change parts of the text

•   Don't trust the spellchecker

•   Read it backwards

•   Read slowly

Why do we miss mistakes?

So, why do you not notice mistakes when proofreading? It can be because there are too many distractions around you, the music may be cranked up or you are intermittently talking to people. It may be through a lack of time or it could be that your grammar, punctuation and use of the English language are not quite perfect.

The views of Dr Tom Stafford

Let’s have a look at some psychology behind this. The reason that mistakes are made is because we ARE smart and NOT because we are stupid or careless. Psychologist, Dr Tom Stafford studies typos at the University of Sheffield and says, “When you’re writing, you’re trying to convey meaning. It’s a very high level task.” He goes on to add that, “ As with all high level tasks, your brain generalises simple, component parts (like turning letters into words and words into sentences) so it can focus on more complex tasks (like combining sentences into complex ideas). We don’t catch every detail; we’re not like computers or NSA databases. Rather, we take in sensory information and combine it with what we expect, and we extract meaning.”

To write our own articles uses a lot of brainpower but a lot less is used when you read other peoples’ work. When you’re proofreading your own work, you know the meaning you want to convey and you expect that meaning to be there. This is why it’s easy to miss mistakes as you expect words and letters to be there.

The reason we don’t see our own typos is because what we see on the screen is competing with the version that exists in our heads.

When you’re proofreading, you are trying to trick your brain into pretending that it’s reading the thing for the first time. Stafford suggests that if you want to catch your own errors, you should try to make your work as unfamiliar as possible. Change the font or background colour, or print it out and edit by hand. “Once you’ve learned something in a particular way, it’s hard to see the details without changing the visual form,” he said.

Your brain is operating on instinct

You can become blind to details because your brain is operating on instinct. By the time you proofread your own work, your brain already knows what it is expecting to see and read. This explains why your readers are more likely to pick up on your errors. Even if you are using words and concepts that your readers are familiar with, their brains are on this journey for the first time, so they are paying more attention to the details along the way.

Professional proofreaders will spot errors

A professional proofreader will polish your copy so the final product is well-written, precise, and easy to read, leaving your readers with a memorable and lasting impression of your work.

Mistakes will undermine your article and can cause the reader to switch off.

Proofreading is an acquired skill and proofreaders are specifically trained and experienced at finding errors in a text. Proofreading is an essential part of the writing process.

Be wary of proofreading your own articles, as fresh eyes are more likely to pick up on mistakes.

Blogging is Key to the Success of Your Social Media Posts

November 14, 2016 Annie Dixon

Blogging is your way of providing valuable content for your readers and search engines love it. It provides the perfect platform for sharing information and news. Your blog should be at the heart of your content marketing strategy as the content can be shared on your social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Google+ and LinkedIn and it provides great material for e-books and emailed newsletters.

Post Your Own Content

I would go so far as to say that it is virtually impossible to maintain a social media presence without having high quality content available to you and here I mean content that is written about your business and is unique to it. You're not going to be directing people to your site if you are sharing and posting other people's articles and content all the time. I'm not saying, don't use other people's stuff but use it sparingly and when it is relevant.

More Traffic Equals More Leads

By sharing your blog posts, you will be increasing traffic to your website and we all know what more traffic means - more people know about you, more people are interested in what you are doing and you have the opportunity of more people buying your products and services.

Which Social Media Sites Are Best For Your Business?

There are many social media networking sites, the large ones as mentioned earlier and also what are called the more niche sites which cater to specific interests and hobbies - there are literally hundreds of them out there! However, whether you choose big or small or a mixture of both, it's finding the site/s where you are more likely to find your target audience. You will become visible by communicating with your audience with strong blogging content.

Be Selective - Quality Over Quantity

Here, I would suggest you don't spread yourself too thinly - select 2 or 3 social media networks to concentrate on. After a while, you should be able to judge for yourself, what's working for you and what's not! And if you want to find a niche site, just put in your business and search.

What Next?

If you have ever found yourself sitting and thinking, "What do I post next?", then creating regular blogs about your business will solve this quandary. You can repost an article or you can take snippets from it, a sentence, a paragraph or a headline.

You will never be stuck for ideas again!

If you would like to know more about how regular blogs posted on social media outlets can raise the profile of your business, please contact Writing and Blogging on 07742 321513 or email annie@writingandblogging.co.uk

What Makes A Good Blogger?

November 4, 2016 Annie Dixon

I have a distant memory of being at school at a very young age and believing that my teachers knew everything. I thought they were the most intelligent people on this earth and that there wasn't a single subject that they weren't experts in.

 Teachers Are Authorities on Everything?

Let's take a subject like Geography for example – I felt my teacher could fill in the names of every state in the USA – and they knew all the state capitals. Now, I know that this of course could be true for some but for others it wasn’t and for the teacher to present that class on the States of America, they would have had to have planned the lesson and researched it thoroughly.

This scenario reminds me of blogging. Strange and unbelievable as it may seem - bloggers don't know everything! I’m really sorry to have shattered your illusions – naturally I jest!

 The Encyclopaedia Britannica

In my teacher’s day, it was books, magazines, periodicals and the Encyclopedia Britannica – oh how I would have loved to have all 32 books sitting on my shelf! Today, it’s the Internet and there is hardly anything that you can’t find out there. However, the information has to be studied, digested and sifted through which takes time.

Sorry, I’ve got a little distracted here as I have to mention that in 2012 Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc. decided to discontinue publication of the English-language print version and focus on the digital versions for online, tablet, and mobile users all around the world.

 It’s All in the Research

Top bloggers are serial researchers and they know how to do it using solid sources and rarely rely on Wikipedia. Quite often it involves checking and rechecking facts and knowing how to properly research a subject.

Bloggers tend to be curious by nature as well as sceptical. Information is gleaned from authoritative sources such as government websites, industry experts, scientific journals and research papers and then with their journalistic instincts sceptically analysed.

All of this can be time consuming and that’s what a good blogger has in abundance as well as patience.

 Research, Research, Research

Websites that have blogs generate more traffic than those that don’t. If you have a News or Blog section on your website which was last updated in 2015 or 6 months ago, perhaps Writing and Blogging can help. It’s our aim to get you more customers through well-researched articles. Call Annie on 07742 321513 or email annie@writingandblogging.co.uk

How Do You Choose the Copywriter Who is Right for Your Business?

September 20, 2016 Annie Dixon

Initially, there are a couple of things to determine.

Do I need content for my business?

I'm hoping the answer might be "Yes"! I'm yet to come across any business that doesn't need any written copy.

Am I happy writing the content myself?

Your answer could be that, "Yes", you're the person who knows most about your business and you have the time to do it and you enjoy writing.

All I can say here is keep doing it.

However, just pause for a moment! As your business grows and ultimately that's what you are striving for, there may come a point when you ask yourself:

Do I still have the time to write my own blogs and content?

Your time could be better spent working exclusively on your business. I'm hoping now your answer might be "No"!

However, for the purpose of this article, you do need a copywriter so how do you choose?

Establish Who is Going to Write For You

I would advocate that you begin working with a copywriter sooner rather than later. OK, you are thinking, a copywriter is writing this! However, there are good reasons why I say this.

You have the time to work with your writer and get to know if you can work with that person and that they are conveying what you want with the right tone. The message they put across will be shaping your brand and you want it to be attracting potential customers and not the opposite.

Where to Find Your Copywriter

There are lots of ways of finding potential copywriters:

•   Networking

•   Recommendation

•   Google Search

•   LinkedIn

•   Website Testimonials

You now have a name or names. Connect with them and see how long it takes them to respond - that might be a key issue in the future. If somebody you know has used them, check if they have been satisfied with their work.

Examples of Articles

•   Check Out What They Have Written in the Past

•   What Style Are They Using

•   Diversity of Portfolio

A good copywriter will direct you to articles they have written or send you examples of their work. You now have seen their work and you like what you are seeing.

Are they available?

 •   Starting Date

•   How Many Articles Do You Require

You need to be realistic about how many articles you need - will it be weekly, every other week or monthly? OK, they are available, the next question is the awkward one!

How Much Do They Charge?

This will vary. Some writers charge by the word, others per article. Expect experienced writers to perhaps charge more.

Turnaround Time

This could be critical. Ask your writer how long the project will take and when you can expect to receive the finished article. You need a copywriter that will deliver the work on time.

The Right Copywriter is Out There!

Choosing the right copywriter is a key element of your business plan. Make sure you are working with somebody who offers the services you want at a cost that suits your marketing budget. You also want somebody that you feel at ease calling if you have any questions.

A good copywriter will also come up with ideas for you and have a plan for moving your business forward.

If you are looking for a copywriter for your business, Writing and Blogging based in Sussex is delivering copy to clients nationwide on a variety of topics. Please call us on 07742 321513 to see how we can work together to move your business forward.

Why Should You Network?

September 19, 2016 Annie Dixon

Networking can be paramount to your business success and is a powerful marketing tactic. Networking is all about making connections and "building" relationships with people. Here, building is the key word.

It's not a quick fix and definitely won't happen overnight. You will need to invest time and effort into making networking "work" for your business. "Consistency" is important and flitting randomly from meeting to meeting rarely brings results.

If you are new to networking it's initially fine to try out a few different meetings to see what might work for you. You will find that you are attracted to groups where you feel comfortable and welcome and you feel connected to the people in the group.

The Benefits of Networking

•   Establish Business Contacts

•   Create a Referral Network

•   Develop Knowledge Resources

•   Accelerate Your Business Development

•   Create Friendships

•   Obtain Help and Assistance

•   Create Opportunities

•   Has a Positive Influence on You

When, Where and Prices

Networking happens on every day of the week, at every time of day and at locations near to you. It varies in price with some groups requiring a membership fee alongside a cost for the meeting. With others you "pay as you go", perhaps for a breakfast, lunch or just a coffee.

Although prices can vary from well over a £1,000 per annum to just a few pounds, the networking clubs that do require a joining fee will normally let you "try before you buy". Quite often they will also have a "lock out" which means there can only be a single representative from a particular area of business, for example one solicitor, photographer, accountant and copywriter.

You could argue that the more you pay, the more valuable it is and the more you would get out of it and a meeting that only costs the price of a coffee certainly couldn't bring results. However, It's not about what you pay, it's about what you personally get out of it.

Attend Regularly

Once you have decided on a particular event or events, stick to them and go along regularly. If they meet once or twice a month or every week, put the dates in your diary and make the time to attend.   Don't expect new business to come flooding in after the first meeting! It takes time to establish trust.

Rome wasn't built in a day!

On a personal level, I'm a firm believer in the power of networking and after several years of going along to many meetings, I have decided to take the plunge and co-host my own monthly meetings. This doesn't mean I will stop going to other networking meetings, this will just be an addition where I feel I can help others get the most out of their networking.

Networking in Hailsham, East Sussex

Hailsham Ladies Who Latte in East Sussex will be meeting on the second Tuesday of each month at The Boship Hotel. Events run from 10am until midday and the cost is just the price of a tea or coffee. The event was the inspiration of Jane Mather, a leading Make-Up Artist and Style Consultant and I'm delighted to be involved to give a helping hand and support.

Blogging - The "Soft" Sell

September 8, 2016 Annie Dixon

"Soft" selling is a friendly and subtle way of marketing your business and you may feel more comfortable promoting your company in this "indirect" way. Let's face it - we've all experienced the "hard" sell, the "direct" approach which takes the form of an aggressive and forceful sell that can be irritating, extremely annoying and ultimately off-putting.

If you prefer the indirect method, blogging is definitely for you!

Soft selling puts very little pressure on people and is very customer focused and in the long run totally persuasive. There is no force involved as the customer ultimately makes their own mind up and it is their decision to buy your product without any coercion.

Everyone is Blogging

Huge corporations blog including fast food outlets and supermarkets as well as charities, educational establishments and small to medium sized businesses. Many are now seeing the potential of blogging as a marketing tool which is relatively inexpensive and just costs your time or the price you pay for somebody else to write your material for you.

Why Blog?

•    Increase Traffic to Your Website

•    Enhance Your Reputation as an Expert in Your Field

•    Generate Publicity

•    Make Your Company More Approachable

•    Improve Communication

•    Promote Your Brand

Blogging is Non-Pushy

With blogging, you are not exerting pressure on existing or potential customers. You are building a relationship in a non-pushy and friendly manner. You are allowing people time to make their decisions as opposed to a hard sell where the sale is made almost immediately.

Blogging Establishes Loyalty

With soft selling, customers will get to like you and your products or services. Loyalty can be established and a long lasting relationship.

Hard sells are becoming less and less effective due to Internet marketing. Potential clients have access to products and services at their fingertips and have time to review services and products that are best for them.

"Soft" selling is the way forward and is the persuasive option to win more clients.

How To Boost Your Business By Writing An e-Book

August 24, 2016 Annie Dixon

It doesn't matter what your company does, an e-book can be good for business. You may think some businesses lend themselves to it more easily but all companies should be thinking of writing electronic books for their existing and potential clients.

Actually, the word "book" might be off putting but it doesn't need to be. "Book" may seem to imply a lengthy article by an established writer. However, you can get a "Ghost" writer to do it all for you or just put your ideas down and let the experts put it all together and edit it into a publishable article. The length of the e-book can range from just a few pages to a much more lengthy account and really depends on the complexity of the subject.

Why should you publish an e-book?

 •    Establish Yourself as an Authority

•    Raise Your Profile

•    Reach Your Target Audience

•    Grow Your Database

•    Bring More Traffic to Your Website

•    Increase Sales

That should sound pretty good for starters!

Establish Yourself as an Authority and Raise Your Profile

People want to know that you are capable of providing the assistance that they want and supplying handy information in the form of an e-book can raise your profile and define you as an expert in your field.

Explaining the benefits of your business can demonstrate that the way you do things makes sense. Sharing your knowledge and providing useful and helpful information can establish you as the authority and the "go to" person for the services you provide.

Grow Your Database and Bring More Traffic to Your Website

You can use the e-book as a handy instrument to capture email addresses and expand your database. It will also be useful content to share in your social media platforms which will drive traffic to your website and your blog.

E-books are excellent lead generation tools. Even if they are free, make sure that they are well written. Nobody wants to receive a "freebie" that doesn't have any value.

Increase Sales

E-books will establish the credibility of your company and credibility breeds trust and trust inevitably leads to more sales.

Excellent "Inexpensive" Marketing

They are an excellent marketing tool for your business without appearing to be so! E-books are relatively inexpensive to produce compared with other marketing techniques.

Conclusion

I really feel that an e-book that is full of helpful and useful content for your readers will be very beneficial to your company and will be well worth the time that you have invested to write it whether it be written by you or somebody else.

Written well, it will be a very powerful tool and could potentially grow your customer base, define you as an expert in your chosen field and generate more sales for your business. And the latter is definitely the bottom line!

If you think an e-book could help your company gain more leads and you would like help in writing the content or editing what you have written, please contact Writing and Blogging to discuss your options.

E-book, E-Book, e-book, e-Book, Ebook or ebook?

August 5, 2016 Annie Dixon
index.jpg

Which do you use? Which form do you prefer? Which is correct?

This article has evolved as I became distracted whilst starting to write another article about the above mentioned topic. The "pedantic" part of my personality led me to research (and I do love to research) which form is right, which is the most used and whether the form is related to country and here are my findings.

Oxford English Dictionary

My first port of call was The Oxford English Dictionary entry which spells it e-book and describes it as "An electronic version of a printed book which can be read on a computer or a specifically designed handheld device".

John Chapman left a message on the above site saying a Google search has shown 306,000,000 results for ebook and 97,900,000 results for "e-book". Make of that, what you will!

The Cambridge Dictionary follows suit with e-book and simply describes it as an "Electronic book" as does the Collins English Dictionary which also includes E-book for the start of a sentence. Collins describe themselves as pioneers in dictionary publishing since 1819. The Macmillan Dictionary concurs with this spelling.

US Versions

Merriman Webster, the dictionary and thesaurus of American English also uses e-book. The Chicago Manual of Style and The Associated Press Handbook both say e-book and if capitalised, it’s E-book.

eBook Variation

So how about eBook? This conforms to Camel Case, also written camelCase, CamelCase (but let's not go down that path and get distracted again) - this is a typographical convention in which an initial capital is used for the first letter of a word forming the second element of a closed compound, e.g.PayPal, iPhone, MasterCard according to Oxford Dictionaries.

ebook.com uses this variation as does WH Smith, formed in 1792 by Henry Walton Smith and which is a British retailer operating a chain of High Street retail shops. The ad for Microsoft Reader also uses this format.

Adding To The Confusion!

dictionary.com uses e-book, ebook, and eBook, the world's leading digital dictionary. Also as an aside, my Pages version on my iPad autocorrects to Ebook, e-book and E-Book.

Conclusion

In many respects, it's really a style choice but I very much hope that it evolves like "email" has from "e-mail". I really do prefer "ebook" and "Ebook" although I have no problem with "eBook" and "EBook" although the latter is my least favourite due to it's unappealing look.

However, for purposes of accuracy according to the English dictionaries I will include the dash, so for me it's e-book and E-book. That's for the time being, but watch this space!

Your Thoughts

What version do you prefer to use?  I would also be delighted to hear your thoughts on this article and whether it has helped clear up some of the confusion on the spelling or whether it has added more uncertainty and indecision.

Are you looking for some research on a particular subject? Writing and Blogging is meticulous in finding out the facts, saving you time so that you can work at the things you do best, running your company. Check out our Blog on www.writingandblogging.co.uk

How To Write Web Content For More Customer Leads

July 26, 2016 Annie Dixon

Your website is your main marketing tool so make sure it has the best possible chance of succeeding and bringing you what you want which is more leads and more customers.

•   Get Straight to the Point

•   Keep it Short

•   Talk Directly to the Customer

•   Use Keywords

•   Focus on the Benefits

•   Use Headings

•   Incorporate Calls to Action

•   Proofread It

•   Allow Yourself Time

•   Keep it Updated

A Few Seconds to Grab a Reader's Attention

You have only a few seconds to grab your reader's attention and some surveys suggest this could be as little as 3-5 seconds. It's therefore imperative that you get straight to the point. Is it really necessary to "Welcome" people to your website if they have already landed on it?

Keep Sentences Short and Avoid Waffling

Write in short, snappy sentences. Avoid long narratives and never waffle! Paragraphs should be short and certainly no more than 4 - 5 lines. A dense block of writing will have visitors changing channels in the "blink of an eye"!

"You" Rather Than "I"

Use an informal, conversational tone that’s easy to read. Treat the article as a conversation as though you are talking to the "end-user". It's important to use "You, Your" and not "I, Me".

Don't Be Sesquipedalian (A Tendency to Overuse Long Words)

Long words have to be scrapped. You want readers to understand what you are saying without having to resort to a dictionary. It may go against the grain but this is the way to get results,

Keywords

Use keywords sparingly and scatter them through the article. Do your research beforehand - there are many sites that can help you with keywords including Google Adwords and Wordtracker.

Benefits, Not Features

Always focus on the "benefits" of your business and not the features. Many business owners who write their own blogs tend to emphasise "How it's done" and this should be avoided at all costs. It's benefits that sell! This is such a key area and your reader needs to know what they will get if they buy your product. If they are uncertain, you've lost them!

Headings

Headings re so important and are the way of directing your reader who is still scanning the article. Your potential new customer can now easily read the part that is the main interest to them.

Call To Action

Your "Call to Action" is what it all boils down to and this is the crescendo. Do you want interested parties to call, email, sign up to your newsletter etc.? Ask the reader to do what you want and make it clear and easy to do it!

Proofread Your Content

Your copy needs to be completely free of errors such as spelling mistakes and grammatical howlers. It's also easy to miss out words although checking your own copy is difficult and a professional proofreader could be a good investment.

It Can Take Days to Write

Writing concise clear content takes time and actually takes more time to write than long-winded copy. A lot of thought has to go into what is included and what is left out!

Update It Regularly!

If you are struggling with your website copy and would like some help, you need to call Writing and Blogging based in Heathfield in East Sussex on 07742 321513. Do I Really Need a Blog for My Business?

July 16, 2016 Annie Dixon

60% of businesses who blog acquire more customers, according to a HubSpot survey. That's a high percentage and that statistic alone has probably answered the question. For those of you out there who don't have a company blog, alarm bells should now be ringing.

 Blogging Should be a Priority

Setting up a blog for your business should actually turn into a priority, so don't waste another moment. Plan how you can get started and use some help if necessary. There is a lot of "uncertainty" regarding business at the moment due to the outcome of the recent Referendum and there could be choppy waters ahead. It's imperative that your business stands out from the crowd or you may find that you get left behind.

No time, no ideas, will it work?!

If you're still sitting on the fence and using those common excuses such as I don't have enough time and I wouldn't know what to write about and will blogging really bring in more customers then read on as there are some very good reasons if the above statistic hasn't pushed you to take some action.

 Don't Be Anonymous!

You may have the best products out there and you may have exactly what somebody is looking for, but if they don't know about it and you are not marketing your company to its optimum, they won't be buying from you or using your services.

 Did I Say Marketing?

A company blog is an integral part of any content marketing strategy. It works 24/7 for you and perhaps unlike some of your employees, it never moans, it doesn't ask for a pay rise and best of all it can generate limitless leads - actually, there is a limit and that's your imagination or the person who is writing for you.

Billions of people use the Internet and you need to be out there so they can see you.

What Can Blogging Do For Your Business?

 •   Draw People to Your Website

•   Establish You as an Authority

•   Establish Leads that can be Converted into Customers

•   Create Opportunities

•   Make You Stand Out

•   Improve SEO

Each new blog that you post creates a landing page and gives you the opportunity to use Keywords. Search engines love fresh content and it proves to Google that your website is right up to date and they you are very much alive and active.

 Post Regularly to get Results

However, there is a catch! You do have to post regularly and your posts have to be engaging, informative and useful, so in other words, they have to offer "value" to your readers.

Unlike a paid advertising campaign that has a shelf life, your blog is there for eternity!

Remember: the only property that you own online is your Website and your Blog!

 Still not convinced?

You really do have to talk to Writing and Blogging, based in Heathfield with clients throughout Sussex, Kent, Hampshire and Surrey. We will help you create a plan and provide you with the information needed to get your blog established so that together we can make your website and your company work. Call Annie on 07742 321513 to find out how you can start blogging now.
